Carnival Season 2027: Every Major Date, and Why They All Move

Key Takeaways

  • Shrove Tuesday 2027 falls on 9 February, and almost every Carnival in the world is dated from it.
  • Easter 2027 is 28 March, which is early, so Carnival season 2027 sits earlier in February than recent years.
  • Rio's elite parades are 7, 8 and 9 February 2027; Venice runs 23 January to 9 February 2027.
  • This is why last year's dates are actively misleading. Carnival is not a fixed calendar slot, and booking from memory is how people miss it.
  • Several travel guides are already publishing incorrect 2027 dates. Check the organisers' own sites before booking anything.

Why do Carnival dates change every year?

Because Carnival is the period before Lent, and Lent is dated from Easter, which is a moveable feast. Easter 2027 falls on 28 March. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is 46 days before it, on 10 February 2027. Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent and the climax of Carnival, is therefore 9 February 2027.

That chain is worth understanding once, because it explains every date in this article and lets you work out any future year yourself.

Easter is calculated from the lunar calendar rather than fixed to a date, so it can land anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. Carnival swings with it by more than a month across the years. Easter 2027, at 28 March, is on the early side, which pulls the whole of Carnival season 2027 into early February.

The practical consequence: if you went to a Carnival two years ago and are planning to return, the week you remember is very likely the wrong week.

When is Carnival 2027 in each city?

The anchor is 9 February 2027, Shrove Tuesday. Rio's Grupo Especial parades on 7, 8 and 9 February, with the Champions Parade on 13 February. Venice runs 23 January to 9 February. The German street carnivals peak in the Thursday-to-Tuesday run ending 9 February, and New Orleans Mardi Gras is 9 February.

Two of these are worth a closer look, and we have written both up in detail:

A note on the cities in the lower half of that table. New Orleans and the Rhineland carnivals key off Shrove Tuesday by fixed convention, so 9 February 2027 and the days before it are reliable. Individual parade schedules within those dates are published by local organisers closer to the time, and we have not invented times here that have not been announced.

Which dates are already being published wrong?

Several well-ranked travel guides currently publish Venice Carnival 2027 as 30 January to 17 February, and others give a 30 January start. The official Carnival site publishes 23 January to 9 February 2027. An end date of 17 February is a week after Ash Wednesday, which is not possible.

This is the most useful warning in this article, so it gets its own section.

Carnival dates are exactly the kind of fact that gets copied between travel sites without being checked, and a moveable date is the easiest kind to get wrong. We found conflicting 2027 dates in circulation while writing this, and resolved them against the organisers' own sites and the Easter arithmetic above.

The rule: for any Carnival, take the dates from the organiser's own site. Not from an aggregator, not from a listicle, and not from last year's article with the year changed.

How should you plan around a moving date?

Confirm the date first, before anything else. With a fixed-date event you can book flights and then slot the event in. With Carnival the date is the one thing you cannot move, so it has to be the first decision rather than a detail you check later.

The sequence that works:

  1. Confirm the dates on the organiser's own site.
  2. Decide which days matter to you. The peak days are the most expensive and the most crowded; the opening days are usually calmer.
  3. Book accommodation. In Carnival cities this is the scarce item, not the flight.
  4. Book travel around it.
  5. Buy event tickets where they exist, and for Rio specifically, before the flight.

The common mistake is doing this in the reverse order: booking a convenient week off work, then discovering the Carnival is the following week.

Is Carnival worth planning a trip around?

For the big ones, yes, provided you go in knowing that peak days mean peak prices and heavy crowds. The alternative worth considering is going for the shoulder days of the same festival, which are considerably calmer and often the part residents prefer.

Both of the Carnivals we have covered in depth have a strong case for the quieter days. Venice's opening weekend from 23 January is far less pressured than the closing days. Rio's Champions Parade on 13 February is the same production as the main nights with much less competition for tickets.

If the spectacle is what you want rather than the crush, the shoulder days are usually the better trip.

Frequently asked questions

When is Carnival 2027?

Carnival 2027 peaks on Shrove Tuesday, 9 February 2027. Rio's main parades are 7, 8 and 9 February, and Venice runs 23 January to 9 February.

Why is Carnival on a different date every year?

Because it is the period before Lent, and Lent is dated from Easter, which moves. Easter 2027 is 28 March, putting Ash Wednesday on 10 February and Shrove Tuesday on 9 February.

When is Mardi Gras 2027?

Mardi Gras is Shrove Tuesday, which in 2027 is 9 February. The New Orleans Carnival season itself opens on 6 January, as it does every year.

Is Carnival 2027 earlier or later than usual?

Earlier. Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, which is towards the early end of its range, so Carnival sits in early February rather than late February or March.

How do I check Carnival dates reliably?

Use the organiser's own website. Carnival dates are frequently copied incorrectly between travel sites, and we found conflicting 2027 dates in circulation for Venice while researching this piece.

Easter 2027 (28 March), Ash Wednesday (10 February 2027) and Shrove Tuesday (9 February 2027) were computed with the standard Gregorian Easter algorithm and cross-checked against the Venice organisers' own calendar.
